Ocean Fruits |
The main impression of our ocean voyages are dishes from sea products. The items on display in restaurants could only be described as an oceanic pharmacy - the array of fish and shellfish on offer could provide nutritional ammunition to heal and prevent several diseases, while offering essential components that could have a significant impact on the health and development of children. All fish - but particularly the oil-rich varieties - contain these precious nutrients. The focus was on oil-rich fish. There was always odor of fish at the territory of the ship restaurant during all our voyages. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which constitute one of two families of essential fatty acids. They were our essential vitamins because the bodies of the two young men needed them but could not produce them. Essential fatty acids aid in the maintenance of cells, the development and function of the brain and nerve tissue, energy production and immune response, among other things. We felt it and ate fish dishes permanently during all our ocean voyages. It seemed us that we got that odor for all over our lives. But our girlfriends were also young and ate the same meals. So that odor did not disturb us. We had fun and joked a lot. From time to time somebody said: “Let’s think of our future! We must have healthy kids. More serious problems were associated with children, and deficiencies were unusually common in boys with behavioral, learning and health problems. They were also prevalent in those suffering from attention deficit disorder, dyslexia and dyspraxia (difficulty in carrying out complex and sequenced tasks)”. But it was not the territory of our university campus! This was the territory of a ship restaurant. Then we took some fruit juice and left for the upper deck to continue our conversation about voyages to tropical islands, unknown territories and products useful for the youth. We were happy to have the chance to meet pretty girls ready to listen to our speeches about protecting children from illness and disease. The girls had to know that “it is every parent's priority”. So it is worth considering the evidence that indicates that children who eat oil-rich fish may have a much lower risk of getting asthma. Emeritus professor Anthony Seaton of the University of Aberdeen is currently studying this theory and the work, not yet completed, suggests that the omega-3 fats may indeed be protective. We are medical university students. |
